Hall of Fame #29: Frank Hyde

Commentator, captain, referee, singer. Frank Hyde’s famous line, “It’s long enough, it’s high enough.. it’s straight between the posts!”, still resonates with rugby league people today.

Long after a successful career on-field as a player, Hyde could be found on the sidelines of grounds around Sydney for decades to come.

Hyde began his career with Newtown despite living within the boundaries of the Balmain Tigers and after two seasons was forced to leave the Bluebags and join the black and gold.

He would also star for North Sydney as their co-captain in the 1943 grand final against good friend Frank ‘Bumper’ Farrell’s Newtown.
