Tradesman-like St George Illawarra prop Blake Lawrie has revealed how close he was to the chopping block with coach Shane Flanagan ahead of NRL Las Vegas where the Dragons take on Canterbury.
Lawrie has told The Daily Telegraph that the stocky prop was last on Flanagan’s depth list with Lawrie struggling with his weight and the speed of the game.
“He was honest and said ‘mate you’re the last front-rower on my list in the squad’,” Lawrie said.
“I was like holy … It hurt me.
“It was a tough conversation but I thanked him for looking out for my career.”
Lawrie is in career-best shape and will need to be at his best to keep his spot on the Dragons bench in 2026.
