Former Melbourne Storm CEO Ron Gauci has backed the NRL and Todd Greenberg’s decision not to completely punish the fans and players of the Parramatta Eels after handing down their salary cap penalties.

Gauci, who stepped into the Storm role after the 2010 breaches were announced, also said the NRL should also reconsider some of the penalties handed down to Melbourne.

“The foundation of any good system and we see this in our own legal system is the importance of having predictability and accountability,” he said on SEN Breakfast.

“Clubs need to know what the process is going to be and what the penalties are likely to be and I see from Todd’s (Greenberg) comments he states the importance of providing an eye to the future about how the NRL will address this.

“I was pleased to see there was consideration given to the impact on players and supporters. I think Todd signalled that he wants to provide some of that consistency.

“I think there’s now an opportunity for the NRL executive to review their processes, maybe even review the penalties of the past,” he said.

“I always felt uncomfortable with the way that they arrived at removing the 2007 premiership and maybe going forward providing predictability so clubs know exactly where they stand, what they’re going to be accountable for and hopefully provide more of a deterrent.”
