Jazz Tevaga made his debut for the New Zealand Warriors on the weekend as a late call-up for Kiwi International Issac Luke. The 20-year-old was told only 24 hours prior at the captain’s run.
Late inclusions aren’t that rare in the NRL but it was Tevaga’s reaction that had us giggling.
Tevaga had just finished training with the Intrust Super Premiership squad but was then called up for the NRL’s final training run and told on the spot by coach Andrew McFadden he would be making his NRL debut against Cameron Smith and the Melbourne Storm.
I was a bit pissed off,” Tevaga began.
“I was like ‘nah, I’ve just finished training, I don’t want to train again!’ Little did I know I’d be debuting, so I’m thankful for the opportunity.
“Cappy (McFadden) called me over and he told me ‘you are starting for us, mate’.
“I swore, I said, ‘what the f’. I was just in complete shock.”
