St George Illawarra legend Mark Gasnier says the Dragons should shift Gareth Widdop to fullback and Josh Dugan to the centres to give the Saints another ball playing option in attack.

Speaking on Fox Sports, Gasnier believes the addition of former Canberra half Josh McCrone could make the move a reality.

“Gareth Widdop, they got themselves into so many three-on-two situations this year and Dugan didn’t have the pass selection to make that final pass,” Gasnier said.

“Gareth Widdop is probably the best in the team at doing that so I think he would be best suited at fullback.

“He’s played it before, doesn’t have a problem with the amount of running.

“The high ball might be a bit of a question.

“I think points is where they suffered, defence they got right.

“I think having McCrone there, if he can play a role like Sam Williams did this year for the Raiders, he can control the match and allow Benji Marshall to do what he does.”
