We love NRL players doing good in the community and Canberra’s Jack Wighton is no exception.

Raiders coach Ricky Stuart recently gave his squad a week’s rest after a pre-season camp in Batemans Bay on the New South Wales South Coast but instead of using the time to rest like the rest of the team, Wighton made the seven hour drive to Tamworth to help promote the NSW Health/NRL health program One Deadly Step which combats chronic diseases in Aboriginal communities of NSW and offers free health screenings for the indigenous communities of country NSW.

“When the boys at CRL (Country Rugby League) asked me if I would come to Tamworth I was only too happy to give them my help and support for such a good cause,” Wighton said.

“It’s important to raise awareness that there are a lot of diseases in Aboriginal communities and there are easy ways to get tested.”

Wighton returned home to Orange in October, an eight hour roundtrip, to promote One Deadly Step but that’s nothing on the fourteen hours he spent to-and-from Tamworth.

Hopefully Jack is keeping his petrol receipts.
