It first held a World Cup in 1954 and fifteen in total. Dozens of countries play the sport around the world in one shape or another. It boasts professional club competitions on both sides of the hemisphere.

So you can’t blame rugby league fans for scratching their heads at some of the newest additions to the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Breakdancing – yes breakdancing – will be at the 2024 Olympics.

Someone will actually go home with a gold Olympic medal for spinning around on their head to Vanilla Ice and Eminem.

Don’t get us wrong, there’s a bunch of sports that have missed out on 2024 that are probably more worthy than rugby league at this point.

But breakdancing is not one of them.

And yeah – rugby league is still waiting for its spot at the Commonwealth Games (which isn’t too far away) – but breakdancing?

Come on!

And here’s where it gets even more ludicrous.

The Global Association of of International Sports Federations are yet to recognise rugby league as a different sport to rugby union which would give league more grants and more financial opportunities around the globe.

The likes of table soccer, arm wrestling, pole dancing and dodgeball are all “real sports” to the body but rugby league is not.

On December 4, the official website of the GAISF proudly announced that the ‘World Flying Disc Federation’ had joined its “growing sports family”.

It’s a weird world, folks.
