Legendary flyer Wendell Sailor believes Wests Tigers have dodged a bullet by missing out on the signing of superstar Latrell Mitchell.
Mitchell recently left the Sydney Roosters to join rivals South Sydney on a one-year deal and turned down a monster contract at Wests Tigers to do so.
He’ll slot straight into the fullback role at Redfern.
“If you buy Latrell and you want him to be your star player at $1 million (a year) – I’ve watched him play fullback through the under 20’s and when he first came into grade, I don’t know if his body shape is going to suit fullback,” Sailor said on Triple M.
“We’ve seen the fullbacks of today…(James) Tedesco, (Tom) Trbojevic and all these guys. I reckon Souths is a better fit for him. And with the Wests Tigers, he didn’t want to go and meet Madge (Michael Maguire) so that’s not a good start when you don’t want to go and talk to the coach.
“I’m not sure why he wanted to leave the Roosters – I think it’s a good fit for him at Souths but I think the Wests Tigers have come out better here, because, I know they don’t have an individual superstar, they’ve got a really good team squad and I don’t think he would’ve been good for them.
“I know he’s a class player and I think he’s made the right move for him. But if I was him at the start, I just think stay at the Roosters for the two years.”
Since missing out on Mitchell, Wests Tigers have added backs Joey Leilua and Adam Doueihi to their roster for 2020.
