“It would be good to go back”: NRL’s next big thing admits that a switch back to rugby union is ‘100%’ on the cards

One of the NRL’s next big things Heamasi Makasini has revealed a code switch back to rugby union may be just around the corner with the ink still fresh on a new contract with Wests Tigers.

The Campbelltown City Kangaroos junior is contracted to Wests Tigers until the end of 2027 but has deep links to rugby union – playing for the Australian Schoolboys and coming through the Waratahs system.

“Coming from rugby it would be good to go back,” the 18-year-old told media.

“100 per cent it’s an option. But my passion is with rugby league right now.

“I want to finish my goals first [and] I’ll see what happens down the track – I’ll focus on rugby league but if there’s any other opportunity my manager will take care of that.”

The fresh-faced Makasini has been shifted into the centres for the club’s first game of the season against North Queensland on Saturday afternoon at Leichhardt Oval.

It is just his second NRL appearance.
