Former Melbourne Storm captain and Queensland Maroons prop Christian Welch could be medically retired in the coming weeks after suffering a head knock at training last month.

According to Fox Sports, the concussion would be the 7th of his career.

The Gladstone-native has played 163 games for the Storm and has a contract option for season 2026 but that deal would be voided if he can’t play enough games this season.

The 30-year-old has played six games for the Maroons between 2019 and 2021.
