No room for Jarome Luai in NSW legend Laurie Daley’s Blues side for State of Origin I

New South Wales Blues legend Laurie Daley – who made the number 6 jersey his own in State of Origin – has ruled out selecting current Dally M Medalist Nicho Hynes for Origin I in a few weeks time.

Hynes has been unstoppable since returning to the Sharks line up but Daley doesn’t believe Hynes should be picked alongside Nathan Cleary who is expected to be named at halfback.

Daley singled out Matt Burton and Jack Wighton for five-eigth despite Wighton retiring from representative football with Jarome Luai not mentioned in the conversation.

“I’ll probably get laughed out of town but I’d go with Burton or Wighton,” said on the Big Sports Breakfast.

“I’d probably look at him (Hynes) being more off the interchange bench.

“That’s where I see him fitting in at this stage.

“I just like those big, bustling five-eighths. I love Wighton and Burton, big runners of the football, both left-foot kicking games, strong in defence. To me it just shows you – when Jack plays Origin regardless of his club form, he plays well.

“Matt Burton, I love him as a player. And in that environment, plus he’s got a bit of a combination with Cleary, he knows those Penrith guys. I’d have no hesitation in throwing him in. I see Nicho in more of that utility role off the bench.”
