‘Relationship needs to be strong’: Walters/Reynolds combination could be most important to Broncos in years

It could be the next great one-two in a long, illustrious history at the Brisbane Broncos with the club announcing recruit Adam Reynolds as their new captain this week.

He joins the likes of Allan Langer, Wally Lewis and Darren Lockyer to skipper the Queensland franchise.

But the arrival of Reynolds alongside coach and premiership-winning club five-eigth Kevin Walters could spark a renaissance at the Broncos after several frustrating seasons.

The Reynolds/Walters combination could be the best thing to happen to the club since Walters himself was playing next to his old partner-in-crime, Langer.

“I’m looking forward to working more closely with Adam and getting to know him as a bloke because it’s important a coach-captain relationship is strong,” Walters said on Monday.

“In the conversations I’ve had with Adam, we are thinking along the same lines and see the game the same way.

“I like the fact Adam brings knowledge, leadership and experience, and he is a very strong character which you need to survive in the halves in the NRL.

“He will help a lot of us, but we have to help him too and make sure he is comfortable in his role and position here. I believe we have the right people here to take his game to a level that we expect from him.”

Since taking over as coach, Walters has struggled to lock down a long-term halves combination as the side spluttered through season 2021.

With Reynolds, the embattled coach may have found the rock to build the rest of his team.

If Walters does it well, he can lead the side tactically (if only vicariously) through the meticulous Reynolds who has been to two grand finals at South Sydney, winning the Rabbitohs the crown in 2014.
