Outgoing St George Illawarra captain Gareth Widdop is set to return from a shoulder injury that has seen him sidelined since April this year.

The Dragons season is hanging by a thread and need to win their remaining 7 matches to qualify for finals footy. Widdop’s return would see the Englishman slide into the halves alongside Ben Hunt, pushing Corey Norman to fullback.

Widdop will have to be pass several tests before being given the green light to return against South Sydney at ANZ Stadium.

It comes as added pressures grow on the club to axe under siege coach Paul McGregor. The Dragons were woeful in their 40-18 loss to Penrith last weekend.

“The Dragons are a mess, it hurts me to say it,” Dragons premiership-winner Jamie Soward told Macquarie Sports Radio.

“They’re just in a shambles, you don’t know what style they’re playing win.

“I like (McGregor), there’s no ill-feeling and we’re just calling it as we see it.

“The internal review needs to go through the whole club, from top to bottom.”
