New Brisbane Broncos recruit Benji Marshall says he is looking forward to the freedom he’ll have at his new club.
The former Golden Boot winner admitted switching from five-eigth to half while at Wests Tigers and then St George Illawarra hampered his career.
Marshall won a title with Wests Tigers in 2005 as a number six outside Scott Prince but was a victim of previous coaches trying to reinvent him as an organiser rather than a runner.
“Looking back, since I have been a halfback I have always been worried about organising everyone else,” Marshall said.
“I want a break from that and just to worry about myself for a second.
“People ask why I made this move. I have made a lot of decisions to please others in the past – this one is for myself.”
A phone discussion between Marshall and Broncos coach Wayne Bennett convinced the mecurial veteran to give it one last shot before retirement.
