Sharks major sponsor Capitol Health struggling to keep head above water

The Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks have kicked all kinds of goals on the field in 2016 and capped off a remarkable season by clinching their maiden premiership last weekend with grand final glory over the Melbourne Storm.

Not bad for a club that could not attract a major sponsor back between 2011 and 2015. That all changed however when Capitol Health came on board and their offshoot company, Southern Radiology, has been on the front of the blue jersey ever since.

But things are going down the gurgler for Capitol Health following a report today in Fairfax with Managing Director, John Conidi quitting only days after Cronulla’s grand final success at ANZ Stadium.

Since March 2015, Capitol’s share price has dropped from $1.10 to 13c – losing the company $351 million in market value.

Capitol Health’s chairman is former AFL Chief Executive Andrew Demetriou.

Despite all their losses, Fairfax reported that Capitol paid another company Demetriou chairs $114,000 last year in consultancy fees.

The plunge in Capitol Health’s share price began well before the partnership with the NRL club started.

“While this financial year has been difficult for the industry, Capitol has revenue growth and EBITDA consistency with the prior corresponding period” Conidi said earlier this year.

“The outlook remains challenging to predict but we remain cautiously optimistic and are confident that the transformative nature of the investments we have made across the last two financial years coupled with our continuing investment in technology will drive earnings in FY17 and beyond.”
