Legendary Rooster and Panther Brad Fittler has warned that players get nothing out of the Auckland Nines concept and are on a hiding to nothing if they were to get injured.
Fittler, who famously scored a length-of-the-field try in the 2014 Nines, says things may change rapidly if there were major injuries this weekend despite the players just trying to enjoy themselves.
“They’re not worried about getting injured,” Fittler told sportsfan.com.au.
“(But) I don’t think they get much out of it. I don’t think they indulge in any of the prize money if they do do well.
“It’s part of the game now, they’ve been told they’ve got to do it.
“I don’t think the players and the clubs were really informed well about the Nines, and this is going to be one of the talking points over the next couple of years.
“If we’re getting any major injuries, you could see some changes.”
