Nine News are reporting that Sam Burgess wants to return to the South Sydney Rabbitohs and the NRL after a dire switch of codes which saw Burgess’ England knocked out of the Rugby World Cup prior to the quarter-finals.

According to the story Souths and Burgess have been discussing the switch and Rabbitohs are “hopeful of Burgess returning.”

In their way is Burgess’ current rugby club Bath and there are also other factors including re-shaping their salary cap and any other offers which may come from the likes of Super League giants Leeds Rhinos.

It’s been previously reported that the Rabbitohs would be willing to offload players to have the inspirational leader back at Redfern.

Burgess was spotted on the weekend at Leigh next to English rugby league coach Steve McNamara as the home nation trounced France 84-4.

Brother Tom recently poured water on speculation telling The Daily Telegraph Sam believed he still had more to prove in the 15-man code.

I’d love to play along side Sam again. I had two years with him (at Rabbitohs) and I’d love for him to come back,’’ Tom said.

“At the end of the day it’s his decision. You never know, we’ll see what happens.

“To make the England squad in the World Cup is a massive achievement, and to play in it as well. He’s enjoyed the experience, but I don’t think he’s finished (with union) just yet.’’
