Legendary coach and current Penrith Panthers GM Phil Gould says Australia’s golden era is finished and there is plenty of work to do.
“The Kiwis were younger, hungrier, faster and more willing than their Australian opponents” Gould wrote in The Sydney Morning Herald.
“The Australian team failed to gain any rhythm or momentum during the course of the match. They had enough possession in good field position to win a dozen games but could not breach the Kiwis’ magnificent defensive line.
“New Zealand were outstanding. Their attack in the first half was exhilarating. It was only surpassed by their defiant and even heroic defensive efforts in the second half. Everywhere Australia went, the Kiwis were there waiting for them.
“It was a tremendous performance by New Zealand and a thoroughly deserved victory. They have beaten Australia three matches in a row for the first time since 1952. If they defeat England later in the year, they will be the No.1 ranked rugby league nation in the world.
“I love Test football and I love our Australian team. But this era is over and we have some work to do.”
