Darius says he and Slater both need to be in Maroons team for Origin I

Incumbent Queensland State of Origin and Australian fullback Darius Boyd has supported a return to the Origin arena for legendary custodian Billy Slater.

But Slater’s comeback will almost certainly mean a shift to the wing for Boyd who has made the number 1 jersey his own since Slater’s last Origin at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in 2015.

“You put your best players in the team and you find positions afterwards I guess,” Boyd told Fox Sports’ NRL 360.

“You’d rather have both of us in the team obviously.”

Meanwhile North Queensland Coach Paul Green says Johnathan Thurston is still a chance of playing in Origin I at Suncorp Stadium despite ongoing injury concerns.

“There’s no point speculating,” he said on Tuesday.

“Everyone gets excited if I say it’s three weeks and then it could be anywhere from three weeks to six weeks.

“It depends on how the shoulder responds, so yeah, particularly with a player like that, I don’t want to get everyone talking too much until we get a bit closer.”
