Newcastle legend Matthew Johns believes Ivan Cleary will in fact return to Auckland and replace Andrew McFadden as coach of the New Zealand Warriors prior to round one of the 2016 season.
Speaking on Triple M’s Grill Team, Johns said that he had information linking Cleary to the Warriors months ago.
“For mine it’s very strange. I got told at the back-end of last season that Ivan was going to be at the Warriors next year,” Johns said.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if he starts round one at the Warriors. I really wouldn’t be.”
Johns went on to say that if it didn’t happen immediately it could still happen depending on the Warriors early form.
“If Andrew McFadden doesn’t get off to a good start, I’ve got no doubt Ivan will be back in charge.”
