‘Things that have to be done’: Dragons CEO Ryan Webb explains sacking of embattled coach Anthony Griffin amid calls for fire sale of team’s biggest names

The St George Illawarra Dragons have finally sacked Anthony Griffin after months of speculation over the head coaching position at the embattled club.

On Tuesday, the axe came down on Griffin on the way back of a six-game losing streak.

“It’s been a busy day and a fairly long day,” Dragons CEO Ryan Webb told SEN.

“It’s not something you want to encounter every day but these are the things that have to be done.

“Originally the plan was to discuss this at the board meeting today,” he said.

“But a few discussions yesterday hastened it and the thought was that if we could get something sorted – it’d be a bit less of a disturbance for the players today.”

Following the announcement, the81stminute.com’s own Curtis Woodward called for a total clean out of the Dragons roster on the Red V Podcast with a fire sale for several of the team’s biggest contracted names including Ben Hunt, Jack de Belin, Jack Bird, Moses Suli and Mikaele Ravalawa.
