St George Illawarra are set to knock back club legends Jason Ryles, Ben Hornby and Dean Young in their quest find a possible replacement for embattled head coach Anthony Griffin according to ‘The Mole’ on the Wide World of Sports website.
It is being reported there that a director of the Dragons club has expressed concerns about recruiting a new coach that has existing ties to the organisation.
On Monday, The Sydney Morning Herald reported that the Dragons had seeked out agent George Mimis who has Ryles, Hornby and Des Hasler on his books.
Ryles is currently serving his apprenticeship under Trent Robinson at the Sydney Roosters after previously working with Craig Bellamy at the Storm. Hornby is working under Jason Demetriou at Souths while Dean Young has been impressive in Townsville with the Cowboys in his assistant coaching position.
“The last time we had success was back in 2010 when we looked outside the box, hired Wayne Bennett and won the comp,” the Dragons director told WWOS.
“We feel that is the way to go. Granted Griffin came from outside but that hasn’t worked as well as we had hoped.
“But we feel it’s best to get a fresh face, someone not aligned with St George or Illawarra and new to the club with no pre-conceived ideas.”
