Rape convictions overturned as Jarryd Hayne prepares for freedom and a possible third trial

Former Parramatta Eels and San Francisco 49ers star Jarryd Hayne could be a free man on bail as early as tomorrow after he successfully had two rape convictions overturned.

Hayne has spent almost 10 months in prison and is set for a third trial.

After a hung jury in his first trial, Hayne was convicted of two counts of sexual assault without consent against a woman at a party in Newcastle on NRL Grand Final night, 2018.

However, NSW Criminal Court of Appeal judges on Monday agreed with Hayne’s legal team that Judge Syme (in the second trial) gave ‘flawed directions’ to the jury while it was also agreed that ‘inconsistent evidence’ was given throughout the trial.

The former Dally M Medal winner will apply for bail on Tuesday at the Downing Centre.
