Former Western Suburbs Magpies big man Scott Hardy has spent the last year fighting cancer – on the weekend he pulled the boots back on for the Londonderry Greys at the tender age of 50.

According to the club’s Facebook page, the “quiet and unassuming” Hardy who played for the Magpies between 1992 and 1994 took on the Blacktown Workers in third grade of the local Penrith competition.

“Ex Western Suburbs Magpies enforcer of the mid 90s Scott The Chief Hardy today put the boots back on for the Londonderry Greys RLFC in the Penrith comp at the age of 50,” the post began.

“Here’s the kicker Scott has spent the past 12 or so months fighting cancer and has had some real battles in that time and to see him achieve this feat today was so damn inspirational.

“He’s a quiet and unassuming bloke but in a time when the game has taken a bit of a beating both on and off the field this is a story that warms the heart and should be told … Love your work big fella.”

The final score didn’t really matter.
