New St George Illawarra assistant Shane Flanagan says he has done his time and is ready to help Dragons head coach Paul McGregor return the club to the finals in 2020.

“It wasn’t good for me and my family,” Flanagan said in front of a packed media scrum.

“There’s a story there for another day, but it was a tough period, I will leave it at that.

“I’m enjoying it [the assistant role], I have a good relationship with Paul and the rest of the coaching staff.

“You can come to training, do your work and then go home and that’s it for the day. “It’s a little bit different when you’re the head coach which is a 24/7 job.”
