Another 300+ NRL gamer will retire at season’s end with fan favourite Chris Heighington to call it quits.
Heighington won premierships at both Wests Tigers and the Cronulla Sharks but the 35-year-old is set to finish in Newcastle as a Knight.
This is his 16th season in the NRL.
“A lot of ex-players told me I would know when it’s time, but I haven’t felt that feeling yet, but I do know the pre-seasons are long and another year is a big ask,” he told knights.com.au.
“I want to go out on my terms. I’m still playing injury free and I don’t want to be greedy.
“I could try and continue to play but I risk picking up a bad injury or slipping in form, so I feel it’s my time to move over and let one of the young boys come in.”
A larrikin of the game, Heighington will always be remembered for his bustling hitups and off-field antics with mate Beau Ryan on The Footy Show.
And, of course, THAT grand final interview he gave in 2005 at ANZ Stadium.
