In news that may have repercussions for sports here in Australia – former WWE Heavyweight Champion Daniel Bryan has been cleared to return to the ring after previously been forced to retire.

Bryan’s last match was in February 2016. Repeated concussions meant the end for Bryan. Neurosurgeons, neurologists and concussion experts however gave Bryan the all clear and he is now able to compete in the high-intensity world of professional wrestling.

“Following more than two years of extensive evaluations, four-time World Champion Daniel Bryan has been medically cleared to return to in-ring competition by leading neurosurgeons, neurologists and concussion experts, including Dr. Robert Cantu, Dr. Javier Cárdenas and Dr. Jeffrey Kutcher,” WWE said on their website.

“Bryan underwent a full review of his medical history and received comprehensive neurological and physical evaluations independent of WWE. He was cleared by each doctor as well as WWE’s Medical Director, Dr. Joseph Maroon.”

A number of NRL players have retired immediately recently due to concussions never to play again.

Could this wrestler’s return pave the way for better research for athletes here in Australia?
