Manly recruit Matt Parcell is happy to play anywhere after being signed from the Brisbane Broncos but says the chance to play hooker is one of the main reasons he headed to Brookvale.
“Hooker’s where I’ve played the past few years and where I feel most comfortable. The decision is up to Trent but I prefer hooker and there’s a great opportunity down here so hopefully I can take it with both hands,” Parcell told nrl.com.
“Hopefully I can continue to use my running game and my speed. I think that’s a bit of a point of difference with my game.
“If we can incorporate that and there’ll be some structure there I can play to a structure but then if there’s an opportunity there I can take it.”
Parcell will fight it out with Api Koroisau for the starting dummy half role after veteran Matt Ballin left for the Wests Tigers.
Former coach at Ipswich Shane Walker says Parcell will revel in his new found opportunity.
“There is no doubt that Matt will be a great acquisition for Manly. He is the new breed of hooker,’’ Walker said.
“Gone are the days where slow hookers can survive. Even more so next year with the interchange going from 10 to eight players.
“It is vitally important that you have got a quick hooker in your team who can take advantage of what is happening in the ruck. Matt certainly does that and he will be huge for the Sea Eagles.”
