Expand the World Club Challenge to Hong Kong and America Says Griffin

Former Broncos coach Anthony Griffin wants the World Club Challenge to be a legitimate rugby league showcase event and he wants more than ten clubs involved.

Writing for Fairfax, Griffin believes expanding the concept would attract new crowds and there was potential to play games in Hong Kong and the United States and most importantly bring back some of our lost superstars.

“The WCC of the future may also lead to less games and a bigger salary cap for the players” Griffin writes.

“Rugby league would then be able to keep Folau, Sonny Bill, Burgess and Hayne, as well as attracting some marquee rugby players from Australia and Europe. We might even be able to entice a club from France. Some of the games could be played offshore e.g. Hong Kong or America. The possibilities are enormous.

“There will no doubt be a lot of opposition to the concept and understandably so. Change does not happen easily, and people are very passionate about their opinions and beliefs, which is a strength of the code. However the competition can be part of the Rugby Leagues future, while continueing to draw on traditional rivalries of clubs and countries.”
