Representative prop and all-round legend Christian Welch opened up his Twitter to a Q and A earlier on Sunday and the great fella – who spends much of his spare-time helping charities close to his heart – didn’t miss with many of his responses.

The big guy, one of the NRL’s great toilers, has been on both sides of the game’s spectrum recently.

He plays for the high-flying Melbourne Storm most weeks but has also been on the wrong-end of two NSW destruction jobs in State of Origin in recent weeks.

But it wasn’t all just about the top end of town.

It’s just a different game now mate. There’s just no more tension/pressure/field position. The grind has been completely eliminated which I reckon sucks..what’s your thoughts

In my experience you’ll play better the more life balance you have. Think of it like investing in 1 share vs going into a fund. Reduce your risk/volatility. Strong off field life helps smooth the bumps of what can be a bit of an emotional rollercoaster 👍👍

Crazy actually I called manager saying let’s do it I’m going day before we played Broncos. Then did my ACL and Eels pulled offer which is fair enough. They got RCG instead who has been outstanding and we were lucky to have a decent 2020 at Storm so a win win I think

Ideally you’d love no financial disparity if a guy wants to play for Tonga/Samoa etc over Aus. Good in theory hard to achieve. Such a long year with NRL/Origin need to protect space for international game

So important the role footy clubs play in communities mate. Just Hope post covid world that grassroots is funded well giving kids opportunities
