Phil Gould calls on Roosters to step in as long-term concussion concerns over Boyd Cordner ramp up

Former Sydney Roosters heavyweight Phil Gould has called for the club and the game to step in as veteran Boyd Cordner considers whether he will play on in 2021 despite several concussions.

Cordner was again taken from the field in Game I of State of Origin and has since ruled himself out of the remainder of the series.

Gould has called for ”further intervention”.

“There’s obviously an issue there with Boyd. Boyd has acknowledged that, the Roosters have certainly acknowledged it with the way they’ve looked after him this year,” Gould said on his Six Tackles With Gus podcast.

“What I’m becoming concerned with him is the ease with which he finds himself in this concussed state and having to leave the field for a HIA.

“I still maintain we are over sensitive to the issue in the vast majority of cases, and I think we’re over-cautious. But it’s quite obvious case by case that you do get players who are more susceptible than others, and once they start to have repeat events then it requires further investigation, and I think Boyd Cordner is at the point where there’s no doubt he requires further intervention.

“If you are employing Boyd Cordner, and you are a coach picking Boyd Cordner to play, and you put him out there in your first 13 each week, what are you now expecting?

“What are you anticipating? What is the likelihood of Boyd Cordner going out week after week and putting in an 80-minute performance like he has in the past. I would think the likelihood of that now is quite remote. It’s always going to be on your mind and it’s always going to be on his mind. That’s not just a welfare issue but it’s a team issue as well, how long before the next one happens?”

Cordner is just 28 but has been the captain of the Roosters and now NSW and Australia for several seasons.
