‘More dangerous with Holmes on the wing’: Why Queensland will play Corey Allan at fullback in his SOO debut

The whispers just won’t go away that Queensland debutant Corey Allan will play his first game for the Maroons at fullback in a State of Origin decider at Suncorp Stadium.

Allan has been named on the wing but word on the street is it will actually be Valentine Holmes who lines up on Josh Addo-Carr on Wednesday.

Queensland would look far more dangerous with Holmes on the flank.

“I’m named on the wing,” Allan said on Sunday.

“The plan right now is to focus on coming up against Addo-Carr. That’s my main focus. We’ll see how training pans out.”

It was a very Wayne Bennett moment when the veteran coach confirmed with Allan that he was playing first Origin match. Bennett casually passed Allan at training and mumbled that he was in the 17.

“It has been a dream and I’m still trying to process it. It’s crazy, I can’t believe I’m actually playing,” Allan said.

“I was happy playing a couple of games for Souths this year and trying to earn my stripes. I was lucky enough to get a call. I’m over the moon.

“I love Wayne. He is a good coach. Anyone that’s under him will say that they love him, because he’s such a good bloke, he knows how to get the best out of his players.”

State of Origin III is this Wednesday at Suncorp Stadium.
