Former South Sydney General Manager Shane Richardson has revealed that he believed Greg Inglis was set to take his own life in 2019 as the legendary figure struggled with bipolar and alcohol.

Inglis infamously went missing over the Magic Round weekend in Brisbane last year and Richardson has told Australian Story he feared the worst for Inglis.

“I was feeling that he would take his own life because he couldn’t see a way out it,” Richardson said.

“Out of where he was going and how he was going to get there, that he’d felt he’d let everyone down.”

Inglis was adamant he never felt suicidal but had struggled in retirement.

“When I was feeling down, training was the only thing that kept me stable,” Inglis told the ABC program.

“Once that went away, it had a massive effect.

“Something I loved had been taken away and I just didn’t know how to cope.”

Inglis is set to come out of retirement and play in the English Super League in 2021.

The piece will air on Australian Story this Monday from 8pm
