This grand final means more to Raiders fans: Furner’s swipe at Roosters supporters

Canberra Raiders CEO Don Furner has taken a little swipe at Sydney Roosters fans after the majority of the weekend’s grand final tickets sales went to Raiders fans preparing to make the trip to Sydney.

“We’re hearing that hospitality and tickets are selling three to one [in Canberra’s favour] and it just shows you how much rugby league means to people in Canberra and the bush regions,” Furner said. “It probably means more to them than the people in the eastern suburbs of Sydney.

“It’s great to see. The town really gets behind its team. We’re a one-team town and that support is fantastic.”

Furner was also excited to see just under 90,000 fans on Sunday doing the club’s viking clap.

“You don’t know how big it’s going to be,” Furner said. “When we first started doing it we didn’t know how many fans would get up and do it. The reality is now it’s got a wonderful tag.

“[But] the people have got to do it. We can manufacture a marketing idea, but they’ve got to do it. It has to have real feeling and that’s what they’ve given it.”
