Mitchell Pearce finds unlikely ally in former Queensland captain ahead of Origin III

Returning NSW halfback Mitchell Pearce has found an unlikely ally in former State of Origin nemesis – Maroons legend Cameron Smith.

“I am a fan,” Smith said over the weekend.

“I think he is the form halfback of the competition.

“What did he win, five or six best on grounds in a row?

“Without those little niggles he had through the first two games, I am sure he should have been there.”

While Smith is hoping QLD can get the job done to win another series, the legendary hooker was adamant Pearce’s return to the Origin pressure cooker would be a positive one.

“He will be out for some redemption for sure.

“He is obviously very confident, he is older and a bit more mature, he knows how to handle those big games. I am sure he will play well.”

Smith will play his 400th NRL game this weekend against Cronulla in Melbourne.
