“Gutted” Kidwell wants to be Kiwi Coach at the World Cup

Embattled Kiwis Coach David Kidwell says he is the right man for the job despite yet another loss last weekend to Australia which was then followed by captain Jesse Bromwich and star forward Kevin Proctor being caught purchasing cocaine at a Canberra nightspot on Friday evening.

Asked by Radio Sport Breakfast in New Zealand if he thought he’d be leading New Zealand at the World Cup, Kidwell said he would and that it was his job to turn things around.

“I do at this stage – I’m going to get this right, that’s part of my job,” he said.

“Our preparation was second to none, I couldn’t fault our preparation. They all had the mentality ‘we are going to win this game’.

“They’re all disappointed and it wasn’t good enough. But there were some real positives there in the second half, and that’s what we need to grab on to and build on.”

Kidwell said he was “gutted” that Bromwich and Proctor had let an entire country down.

“I was gutted. I trust these men and they’ve broken that trust, and they will have to work extremely hard to win that trust back,” he added.

“This is out of character for these two men, these are good men, they work extremely hard, and that’s why I’m so gutted.

“This is still raw…I have to meet with senior management, work with the NZRL, senior leaders of the team, come up with a solution. They are extremely remorseful.”
