Phil Gould says struggling Wests Tigers are physically weak and attitudes need changing

Phil Gould says Wests Tigers are not at an NRL standard physically and has questioned how fit the players are after another loss on the weekend against St George Illawarra.

The Wests Tigers have not won since the opening round and have been steamrolled ever since costing coach Jason Taylor his job.

Gould, now General Manager of the Penrith Panthers, believes Wests Tigers attitude needs to change.

“Well, to be honest, it was just more of the same” Gould wrote for Wide World of Sports.

“In every game, they’ve played this year, they’ve been reasonably competitive for the first 40 or 50 minutes.

“Unfortunately, the energy and confidence seems to drain away at this point of the match and they have been unable to finish anywhere near strongly enough over the concluding stages.

“A couple of their forwards have toiled away admirably. Others have been found wanting under pressure. Fullback James Tedesco can hold his head high with the effort he contributes over the 80 minutes. Winger David Nofoaluma also get through a mountain of work and has been very impressive.

“The Wests Tigers desperately need a new coach and a new attitude.”

Wests Tigers captain Aaron Woods defended his players on Sunday where Dragons winger Jason Nightingale scored a first half hat-trick.

“It’s tough at the moment with everything that’s happening but all we can do is work hard each day,” Woods said.

“I have 100 per cent faith in all the boys we have here. It’s not as if we’re not trying. I think we just got a little bit frustrated out there tonight. We had a lot of opportunities but we just couldn’t capitalise on it.”

Caretaker coach Andrew Webster said they blew their chances against the firing Saints.

“I thought we were in the game,” Webster said.

“We had plenty of ball and plenty of opportunities on their line but we either didn’t execute or got disheartened with what we were doing.

“We dropped the ball over the line and then they go down our end and score.”

Ivan Cleary is expected to be announced as new coach on Monday but it doesn’t get any easier for Wests who travel to Townsville to play the North Queensland Cowboys.
