James Gavet’s alcohol abuse and depression led to suicide attempts

New Zealand Warriors forward James Gavet has revealed his struggles with depression and alcohol.

The 28-year-old former Wests Tigers and Brisbane Broncos enforcer also admitted to attempting suicide on three separate occasions.

“Those memories will never, ever, leave me or any of the people that were there,” he told 1 News.

“A few of those (attempts) were really close.

And despite labeling Kieran Foran an Aussie, Gavet credited the star five-eigth for helping him through the difficult times.

“He is just always there to encourage you and ask: ‘Hey, man. Are you okay? Bro, we really need you” said Gavet.

“He gives you these locked eyes and you can’t run away from it. And you don’t want to let him down.

“It’s the professionalism that we needed. Kieran’s an Aussie but a friend you probably only see in a couple of people back here.”
