LES JOHNS

Canterbury-Bankstown’s greatest ever fullback. Dubbed ‘The Golden Boy’, Les Johns quickly stamped himself as one of the premier players of the NSWRL after his debut in 1963.

From the Bulldogs website: “Les is considered to be Canterbury’s greatest ever fullback after being named in the Berries to Bulldogs 70 Year Team of Champions in 2004 and is ranked alongside Terry Lamb and Steve Mortimer as the club’s greatest player.”

Johns played 16 games for New South Wales and represented Australia on 14 occasions with his first appearance in the green and gold jersey coming in his debut season in Sydney.

His career was cut short in 1971 due to chronic knee injuries.

Les was also a talented cricketer playing for Sutherland, St George, Petersham and Bankstown in the Sydney grade competition.
