Cronulla-Sutherland’s ten greatest imports

The Cronulla Sharks are just one win away from their maiden premiership crown. Since 1967, it’s been heartache and struggle for their beleaguered fans but is it all finally about to come to an end?

In this grand final week, we look at Cronulla’s ten best imports. Enjoy!

10: MICHAEL ENNIS

Some questioned the Michael Ennis signing after he was shown the door (as captain) of Canterbury-Bankstown. But what a decision it has been from the Sharkies. Ennis retires this weekend with a chance to win the big one while Canterbury’s Michael Lichaa is reportedly on the outer at the Bulldogs.

9: LUKE LEWIS

Lewis was in a similar situation as Ennis. The forward was skipper of Penrith when Panthers GM Phil Gould decide to go in another direction with his squad.

8: JASON STEVENS

The big prop began his career at the St. George Dragons but made his name at Cronulla becoming a New South Wales and Australian forward.

7: MICHAEL SPEECHLEY

Named in Cronulla’s ‘Dream Team’ back in 2006, Speechley spent time at both Newtown and South Sydney before cementing his spot in The Shire.

6: JAMES MALONEY

Remarkably, the Sydney Roosters let Maloney go in favour of young Jackson Hastings despite Maloney being part of the 2013 Roosters premiership team. Maloney has since proven his worth more times than once. Nice one, Roosters!

5: KEN MADDISON

Maddison had already carved out an impressive career at St. George before switching to rivals Cronulla in in 1972. The following year he won the Rothmans Medal, was selected for the Kangaroos and helped the Sharks into their first grand final.

4: DANE SORENSEN

Australian fans were already familiar with Kiwi Sorensen when he joined the club in 1977 after debuting for New Zealand five years earlier. He quickly became one of Cronulla’s favourite sons along with brother Kurt.

3: CLIFF WATSON

It was the grizzled Englishman who helped turn Cronulla’s forward pack into a dominant force in the lead-up to the ’73 grand final. Prior to Watson, Cronulla and their pack were second rate at best.

2: GAVIN MILLER

Miller actually started his career with stints at both Western Suburbs and the Roosters before settling at Cronulla. In 1989 he won the Dally M and Rothmans Medal. The forward played for Australia and New South Wales.

1: TOMMY BISHOP

The little English halfback was the architect of Cronulla’s first golden era when he took over as captain-coach in 1970. It took a couple of years but it wasn’t long before Bishop was the toast of Cronulla as the club headed for their first grand final appearance in 1973. He was made a Cronulla Sharks ‘Immortal’ in 2005.
