Seven Playmakers Who Should be Back in the NRL

The National Rugby League has a playmaker crisis with a number of clubs searching for talent and depth.

So where have they all gone?

The answer might be found in Europe where a number of former NRL stars are now plying their trade.

Here are seven of them who would surely fit nicely into rosters right across the competition.

Todd Carney – Catalans Dragons
The former Dally M Medalist obviously has all the talent in the world and his current exile from the NRL has been well publicised. Carney has reportedly been in talks with old club Cronulla but there are plenty of other clubs in desperate need of a quality playmaker like Carney.

Terry Campese – Hull KR
From all reports the former Raiders captain is turning back the clock over in England. Campese’s NRL career is probably over but a few clubs could do worse than having the one-time State of Origin five-eight on their books.

Rangi Chase – Salford Red Devils
When we last saw Chase in the NRL, he was little more than a fringe player. Since heading to the Super League, Chase’s game has developed out of sight and would certainly fill a void at a few NRL clubs.

Luke Walsh – St Helens
Only 28, the former Penrith Panther has plenty of footy left in him. Controls a team well and can win a match with his kicking game.

Travis Burns – St Helens
Played the Josh Reynolds role long before Josh Reynolds. A pugnacious competitor who can really sting in defence. May not have the creativity of others, but will bleed for his team and do the ugly things to get a result.

Jarrod Sammut – Wakefield Wildcats
Touted for big things when he first burst onto the scene with the Panthers but struggled with consistency. An enigmatic match-winner on his day.

Albert Kelly – Hull KR
One minute Kelly is the Titans’ golden boy, the next he’s being shipped off to England and replaced by Daniel Mortimer. Kelly, at his best, is a seriously dangerous running five-eight and has the x-factor all clubs are looking for.
